You'll hear them referred to as Carrier Ethernet or Metro Ethernet. They are most often available in major cities or suburban business locations. However, a related service called Ethernet over DS1 (EoDS1) uses multiple T1 lines to bring Ethernet bandwidth to smaller towns or less populated rural areas.

Why Ethernet?

Most of the excitement surrounding Metro Ethernet services is justified. Your connection is a simple RJ45 connector just like the one's on your LAN equipment. Pricing is highly competitive, with generally lower lease prices per Mbps than traditional telecom services.

What Ethernet Services Are Available?

Lower bandwidth services up to 50 to 100 Mbps or more may be available over twisted pair copper if you are close to a carrier's point of presence. Higher bandwidth services up to GigE or even 10GigE require fiber optic connections.
